Gloomhaven User Journey

 I created a user journey map for Gloomhaven that considers touchpoints and devices. The map visually represents a user's experience and identifies design opportunities.

Overview

​As a UX designer, I understand that users expect to interact with services through multiple channels and devices. To design a seamless user experience, I included possible redesigns to Gloomhaven that consider these touchpoints. To evaluate and identify new design opportunities, I created a user journey map that visually represents a user's experience as they interact with the service through various touchpoints and devices. The map stands alone as a resource for an external audience and depicts the multiple channels, touchpoints, and devices that exist or may exist in the design context.

Background 

Gloomhaven is a tactical combat game set in a dynamic world where motives constantly change. Players become adventurers, each with unique skills and motivations for venturing into this sinister realm. Collaborating is essential as they conquer treacherous dungeons and neglected ruins. Along the way, they improve their abilities, acquire loot, uncover new places to explore and shape an intricate story through their choices.

After each scenario, players shape the story based on their decisions, reminiscent of a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book. Collaboration is also crucial here as players strategically combat automated monsters using a unique card system that determines turn order and actions.

During their turn, players select two cards from their hand, with the top card determining their initiative for the round. Each card offers both top and bottom powers, allowing players to choose how to combine them. However, players must be cautious as cards are permanently lost over time. Lingering too long in a dungeon may result in exhaustion and a forced retreat.

Goal

The goal of Ayoub B.'s user journey is to enhance his Gloomhaven gameplay experience by utilizing the AR feature, sharing game status easily through a dedicated app, and accessing a vibrant community to discuss the game and gain insights without encountering spoilers. Additionally, the app's tracking feature ensures that Ayoub can seamlessly resume his progress and character unlocks, granting him the freedom to pause and resume the game without losing his place.

User Persona

​

  • Ayoub B., a 23-year-old Gloomhaven player, is excited about playing scenarios and trying out the numerous possibilities the game offers. He's introduced to the AR feature we designed for Project 4, allowing him to interactively explore character information with his phone camera.

  • Players typically share their game status on third-party apps like Reddit, Steam, and Facebook, so we designed an app that makes it easier to share. The app includes a community feature where users can discuss the game and access standard rules.

  • The community feature allows players to discuss the game and share tips and tricks. The user is excited but careful not to reveal spoilers.

  • The app tracks game scenarios and user status, making it easier to remember progress and unlocked characters. This feature provides board game players with the freedom to take down the game without losing their place.
